Administrative RepresentationAs an RAAus member, we handle the complexity of CASA on your behalf—so you can focus on flying. We guide your training pathway from first briefing to flight review, support aircraft maintenance and airworthiness standards, and make sure your medical requirements are clear and appropriate for recreational operations. Behind the scenes, we’re in constant contact with CASA, advocating to protect your privileges and keeping compliance straightforward, so the rules stay simple while safety stays front and centre. Simplified Medical Regime
RAAus keeps medicals simple with a self-declaration system designed for recreational flying. If you’re under 75 years of age and don’t have any safety related medical conditions, you simply self-declare that you meet the health standard required for a private motor vehicle driver licence in Australia —no routine specialist exams or expensive medical checks.
If you’re over 75 or have a relevant medical condition, we simply require a statement from your GP that you meet the drivers licence medical standard. We still keep safety front and centre: if you’re managing certain conditions or medications, there may be extra steps, and we’ll guide you through them. For most members, it’s quick, affordable, and stress-free—so you spend less time on paperwork and more time in the air.
Maintenance Training
RAAus offers an owner operator maintenance pathway that puts control in your hands. By completing an online training course, you are issued with a Level 1 Maintenance Authority. This authority allows you to perform maintenance and repairs on your own aircraft, always within the defined boundaries of the RAAus Technical Manual. The authority must be exercised in accordance with the general competency rule, ensuring members only carry out tasks when they have the knowledge, skill and currency to do so safely.
To further support members, RAAus also runs optional two-day practical maintenance courses, and recommends undertaking a Certificate II in Aeroskills for those seeking a broader foundation in aircraft maintenance.

The result is lower costs, quicker turnarounds, and a deeper understanding of your aircraft without compromising safety. It’s a unique balance of self-sufficiency and support for Australian recreational pilots.
Member Liability Insurance
Here’s a brief overview of what’s covered and what you need to consider:-
What’s Covered:
- Third Party Liability: Up to $20 million, with Sub-limits of: Passenger legal liability: $250,000, Motor vehicles airside: $100,000, Tenants liability: $1,000,000.
- This covers accidental bodily injury (including death) and property damage arising from RAAus activities. It includes legal defence costs if negligence is alleged and proven.
Key Considerations:
- Liability must be proven in court for the policy to respond.
- This is not personal accident or health cover — additional policies may be needed for this type of cover.
- Australian law does not cap the amount a third party can claim, so while this policy provides excellent value it is worth considering top-up cover.
Who and What Are Not Covered:
- Airfield operators, Rotary wing and gyroplane operators, Hangar owners, Flight schools, Maintenance activities.
